How BMR is calculated
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, widely considered one of the most accurate BMR formulas for the general population:
Men: BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A + 5
Women: BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A − 161
Where W is weight in kilograms, H is height in centimeters, and A is age in years.
Example: A 30-year-old man at 160 lb (72.6 kg) and 5'9" (175 cm) has a BMR of about 1,704 calories/day — the energy his body needs before any movement or exercise.
BMR vs. TDEE
BMR only accounts for rest; your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) adds in daily activity and exercise, which is what you actually need to eat to maintain your weight. Use our Calorie Calculator to get that full picture and weight-goal targets.
