How unit conversions work
For most categories, each unit has a fixed conversion factor to a common base unit (like meters for length or grams for weight). Converting between any two units is a simple ratio:
Result = Value × (Factor of "From" Unit) / (Factor of "To" Unit)
Temperature is the exception, since Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin scales don't share a common zero point, so dedicated formulas are used:
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
K = °C + 273.15
Example: 10 miles converts to about 16.09 kilometers. 98.6°F converts to exactly 37°C.
